RDA Hunter welcomes the recent announcement by NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes that the Baird Government’s infrastructure investment in Newcastle and the Hunter is spurring population growth in the region.

Population growth is critical for regional economic growth and sustainability. The figures, which suggest a population increase to 810,000 by 2036, are a sign of the strength of the local economy.

In Urban Planning for the Hunter’s Future (2012), RDA Hunter advocates for a population of one million to give the region critical mass and economic sustainability. The one million person target was used by RDA Hunter in its submission to the Federal Government’s Smart Cities Plan as the basis for planning for the Region’s future technology and infrastructure needs.

“Our role is to assist in growing the Hunter’s economy. We need to set aspirational targets in order to achieve our vision for a vibrant, well-functioning and connected urban area and maintain our position as Australia’s largest regional economy.” said RDA Hunter CEO, Todd Williams.

“Planning for a population of one million means that the Region’s future needs are covered and that government investment in economic infrastructure and technology is targeted and future-proofed.” continued Mr Williams
