Any extra funds secured by the Hunter from the $1.75billion Port of Newcastle lease deal should be spent on regional infrastructure to boost the port operation.

The view from Regional Development Australia Hunter chief executive Todd Williams came amid calls from regional leaders for a bigger slice of the proceeds than promised by Premier Mike Baird.

On Wednesday, the NSW government announced it would lease the Port of Newcastle for $1.75billion to the Port of Newcastle Investments consortium of equal partners Hastings Funds Management and the Chinese government-owned China Merchants.
