RDA Hunter’s ME Program recently hosted Why are Maths and Science Important for the Future of Australia’s Industry?

Staged as part of National Science Week the breakfast event featured key note addresses from Lily Serna and The Hon. Dennis Jensen MP.

Renowned mathematician, Numeracy Ambassador for National Literacy and Numeracy Week and resident expert from SBS’s Letters and Numbers, Lily Serna, spoke about the career opportunities studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) subjects has provided her and real life applications of these subjects.

Dr Dennis Jensen MP, Federal Member for Tangney, former research scientist and member of the Advisory Board of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Anti Matter/Matter Research, addressed the 80 strong audience of education, business and industry representatives about the importance of science and skilling young people in STEM for the future of Australia’s industry.

RDA Hunter’s ME Program then hosted Ms Serna and Dr Jensen at an event for Hunter school students. More than 200 ME Program partner school students heard about Ms Serna’s personal experiences of studying STEM and the unexpected career opportunities it has provided her, while Dr Jensen overviewed the opportunities available to STEM qualified students in the workforce of the future and discussed the importance of studying maths and science and why STEM is integral to the future of industry in Australia.
