A joint venture of WBHO Infrastructure and McIlwain Civil Engineering has been awarded the contract to construct the new Tourle Street Bridge in Newcastle.

A project that the Regional Development Authority described as of ‘national significance’ and ranked as the number one infrastructure priority for the region in its 2014 Hunter Economic Infrastructure Plan.

The project will involve duplicating 3.8 kilometres of Tourle Street and Cormorant Road between Industrial Drive at Mayfield West and Egret Street at Kooragang. The duplication will provide two lanes of traffic in each direction and will include the new bridge, to be built on the western side of the existing bridge.

WBHO Managing Director Peter Ryan said:

“With planned future growth in the surrounding local area, the bridge will be important in helping support business productivity. WBHO is excited about working with RMS and the local community to deliver the project.

“The project team is committed to delivering a high quality asset while minimising impact on local roads, communities and the local environment.”

McIlwain Civil Engineering General Manager Keith McIlwain said:

“The new bridge and two-lane road will be good news for local businesses and will free up traffic flow in and out of Kooragang Island. We’re proud to be creating this much needed community asset.”
